Thinking of Leaving Coupang? My Experience Deleting My Account

how to delete coupang account

When I decided to stop using Coupang, I assumed deleting my account would take a few taps inside the app. I was wrong.

What should have been a simple process turned into a frustrating search through menus, Korean-language screens, and settings that seemed intentionally difficult to find. If you’re not fluent in Korean, the experience can feel even more confusing.

After several failed attempts, I finally managed to permanently close my account. Here’s exactly what I learned along the way.

First: Check for Anything That Will Block Deletion

Before I could even access the account deletion option, Coupang required me to clear a few things.

The biggest obstacle was my Rocket Wow membership. As long as the subscription was active, the system wouldn’t allow me to proceed with account closure.

I also discovered that pending orders, active refunds, and remaining balances could prevent deletion. If you have anything still being delivered or refunded, you’ll need to wait until everything is completed.

Cancelling Rocket Wow Was Easier Than Expected

I opened the Coupang app and went to *My Coupang (마이쿠팡). From there, I found the *Rocket Wow Membership (로켓와우 멤버십) section.

The cancellation process wasn’t exactly straightforward. Coupang presented several screens highlighting membership benefits and encouraging me to stay. I had to continue selecting options similar to “I still want to cancel” until I finally reached the confirmation screen.

Once the membership was cancelled, I could move on to the next step.

The Part That Almost Made Me Give Up

This is where most guides leave out an important detail.

I spent several minutes searching the mobile app for a “Delete Account” button that simply wasn’t there. Eventually, I learned that Coupang hides the account deletion option in its desktop interface.

Inside the account settings, I switched to PC Version (PC버전). If you can’t find that option, using a laptop or desktop browser is much easier.

After logging into the desktop version, I navigated to My Coupang → Edit Member Info (회원정보수정) and verified my password.

Only then did I notice a small link at the bottom of the page labeled Member Withdrawal (회원탈퇴).

It’s easy to miss because it isn’t prominently displayed.

Completing the Deletion Request

After clicking the withdrawal link, Coupang asked for my password again and displayed a short survey asking why I was leaving.

I selected one of the reasons, agreed to the warning about losing my account data, and submitted the final withdrawal request.

At that point, the process was complete.

What Happens After Deletion

Before confirming, it’s worth understanding what you’ll lose.

In my case, all shopping history, reviews, saved preferences, and membership benefits disappeared. Access to Coupang Play ended immediately, and any connected Coupang services tied to my account were also closed.

Another detail I noticed is that you typically can’t create a new account using the same information right away. Coupang may enforce a waiting period before allowing re-registration.

One Important Privacy Note

Although the account is deleted, some transaction records aren’t erased immediately. South Korean regulations require companies like Coupang to retain certain purchase and payment records for legal and tax purposes.

That doesn’t mean your account remains active, but some archived transaction data may still be stored for the legally required retention period.

Final Thoughts

Deleting a Coupang account wasn’t difficult because of technical complexity—it was difficult because the option is buried deep within the platform. Once I discovered the desktop version workaround and cancelled Rocket Wow, the rest of the process took only a few minutes.

If you’re struggling to find the right menu, search for the Korean term 회원탈퇴, which means “Member Withdrawal” or “Account Deletion.” That’s the key option you’re looking for.
